I am pretty sure that you guys have run out of ideas for places to visit on vacation. If you have experienced that, I can relate to you and we always end up with the same coffee shop or other places that we aren’t satisfied with. Therefore, in this article, I have recommendation for you and your friends a place to hangout, which is a public art gallery named NuArt Sculpture Park.
NuArt Sculpture Park is a sculpture art gallery located in the northern part of Bandung. This place is a center for sculptures by Nyoman Nuarta and has been around since 2000. Nyoman Nuarta is an Indonesian sculptor and one of the pioneers of the New Art Movement. He is best known for his masterpieces such as the Fatmawati Soekarno Statue, the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Statue, the Jalesveva Jayamahe Monument, and the Proclamation of Indonesia Monument. In this gallery, you will be able to witness a lot of Nyoman handcrafts with an affordable ticket.
NuArt Sculpture Park is located in North-ish Bandung. I called this as a hidden art gallery because it is placed in a housing area named Setra Duta. Specifically, the address of this gallery is Jl, Setra Duta Raya No.L6, Ciwaruga, Kec. Parongpong, Kabupaten Bandung Barat.
For accessing this place, if you use private transportation, you can just type the name of the place then you can simply follow google maps instructions. In contrast, if you don’t have a private vehicle, I suggest you order an online transportation service because based on my experience, there is no public transportation through this area due to its hidden location.
There are 2 types of visitors when it comes to tickets and both of them have their own price. The visitors are classified as students and regular visitors. For regular visitors, Nuart gallery charges 50k IDR/person and for student visitors, they only charge 25k IDR/person. In order to get that 50% discount, the visitors must prove their identity by showing the receptionist a student card. So for all the students, what are you waiting for?
Before you go to Nuart gallery, there are some regulations you should take note of in terms of ticket purchase. Nuart gallery doesn’t accept any on the spot ticket payment which means you should make a reservation with the ticketing staff first. Moreover, This gallery visit schedule is divided into 4 sessions that you are free to choose as long as the slots are still available. The length of each session is approximately 3 hours. For further information about ticketing, you can check Nuart Galerry’s Instagram.
For those of you who bring a private vehicle, you don’t have to worry because the parking area provided is quite large. It can fit up to 20 cars and 30 motorcycles. Not only providing a huge parking area, but the parking price is also quite affordable, which is only 2k IDR/vehicle. However, the parking payment system here is kind of unique, because we don’t directly pay it to the parking man, but we pay it to the receptionist where we get our ticket that will be shown to the security later when we head home.
In NuArt Sculpture Park, there are several rules that we should obey. Based on my research, these rules are not written in any of NuArt Sculpture Park’s social media. The rules will be told by the guide once we buy the ticket. the rules are:
- You are not allowed to touch any of the sculptures inside and outside the gallery
- A paper bracelet will be given by the guide and you have to wear it as a sign you are an official visitor.
- If you carry any bag, you cannot bring it into the gallery, you have to leave it in the storage cabinet
- One session is 3 hours long, so if your time is up you are required to leave the gallery area.
- And lastly, you are not allowed to bring any food to the gallery.
I believe that these are common rules in museums or galleries and I think you guys will not mind obeying these rules above.
Now, let us move to the main content which is the gallery itself. When you are about to enter NuArt Sculpture Park, You will be greeted with tall trees that make the air around you cool and chill. Then, when you enter the gallery, you will meet the receptionist table and its staff to check your ticket payment and give a rule explanation. After that, we are free to explore the three-floors building with a total area of 1000m2. All the works that are placed on the first floor are created by Nyoman Nuarta and the rest of the floors are the place where we can find works from other local artists like Aditya DP. Not only the gallery that is filled with paintings and sculpture but the outside part of the gallery is also filled with numerous amazing sculptures.
In addition, NuArt Sculpture Park also provides us with music and theater. Music and movies that are being played there are always changing from time to time. For instance, when I visited the gallery a month ago, the featured work was a visual mixtape created by Aditya DP and curated by Bob Edrian.
We can capture all the works of these various artists and post them on our social media. But remember, we also have to obey the rules not to touch any of the sculptures and paintings there.
After exploring the entire gallery, we must be tired and hungry. Fortunately, Nuart also collaborates with a restaurant that provides variative menu, ranging from traditional menus such as ayam betutu to European menus such as spaghetti. The drinks offered by this restaurant are also quite variative. You can cure your thirst with fresh drinks like cucumber lemon or coffee. However, in terms of price, Laxmi is not really pocket-friendly restaurant, especially for students like myself. So, if you feel that you don’t bring enough money, I suggest you eat outside the gallery. But, if you are curious and interested, it is better to do a research on the price first before you come to eat in this restaurant. You can check all of the food prices and other information regarding the restaurant on their Instagram.
My Personal Experience
After explaining the museum from “their” perspective, now let me talk about my experience when I visited Nuart Sculpture Park. I am pretty sure that you all need my personal experience because there are things that you might not expect when you come to Nuart Gallery.
First thing first, I will let you know that I visited this museum in March 2022. So the pandemic was still kind of a thing. I came to this enormous gallery with one of my college friends and we were having good times there. If I may say, the motorcycle parking lot is kind of scary to me. It is scary because it was not paved and surrounded by trees and bushes. I think they should revitalize their motorcycle parking lot.
We booked the third session which starts at 1 PM – 3 PM. At that time, my friend and I came half an hour early. I thought we would not be allowed to enter the gallery before the session started, but the staff said otherwise. We are allowed to enter the gallery earlier because the gallery was not too crowded at that time. It benefits us even though it sort of violates existing procedures. My friend and I bought tickets for students. So we get half price discount on condition of showing a student card. Lastly, If you are a Muslim, you don’t have to worry. Nuart Sculpture park also provides proper Musholla for Muslim visitor.
There is no huge problem when me and my friend explore the gallery except the rain that prevent us to see the workshop. Nevertheless, we are still able to watch the audio visual journey called Depth of Blue – Noir Narration in a mini theater. However, the theater is slightly under my expectation because they don’t provide the visitor with proper seat and that is probably why the theater is lack of visitors even though the presented art was amazing. Unfortunately, we did not get a chance to visit Laxmi Restaurant because we could not afford it. We decided to buy food outside the gallery,
In conclusion, Nuart Sculpture park is a perfect place for you to hangout whether with your family, friends, or even your colleagues. This art gallery offers a spacious place, affordable ticket, instagrammable photo spots, and a fancy restaurant. So, what are you waiting for? Make a reservation now and don’t forget to ask someone to accompany you in exploring this beautiful gallery.
