Food Hygiene in China and India

Nowadays, the existence of hazardous food has been a human health problem. Many food safety issues that we encounter nowadays are no longer new stories to any of us. The governments are doing their very best to improve the safety of the food supply that we have. But, the incidence of food-borne diseases still stays as a significant health issue in both advanced and growing countries.

What is food hygiene?

Food hygiene is a scientific method or term that is used to prevent food-borne diseases. The food that we consume has the potential to transmit pathogens that could bring about an illness to a person.

Some of them can even be transmitted through food, like Coliform, E Coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Staphylococcus Aureus, and Pseudomonas. They are the primary sources of infections which includes diarrhea, typhoid, food poisoning, urinary tract infections and pneumonia.

It grows quickly when the food is kept in moist and warm conditions. They can also enter the human body if the food is not washed or if there is contamination.

It can also reach the food through flies, exchange cash with infected hands or through contaminated water.

Food hygiene situation in China and India

Food hygiene has been a serious health problem in the two most populous countries in the world, China and India. It has been a huge problem to supply a large, geographically dispersed population in China and India. The reason for that is there are millions of those who are poor and malnourished in those countries.

All of that has led to the increase in the number of fraudulent suppliers and also negligent government policies. This results in adverse public health, especially in vulnerable communities.

These crises further compromise international judgment, poor governance, weak political will, inadequate policies and loose enforcement.

The process of improvement is not just all about economic growth, job creation, and infrastructure. Because clear, clean, and consistent rules for food regulation and enforcement are the most important thing to a government.

China’s food hygiene situation

China bears a considerable percentage of the global health and economic burden of eating risky food.

The price of foodborne diseases in China is predicted to be over US$30 billion each year. Where almost 50 percent of the whole financial burden of foodborne diseases in Asia.

Recently, the deteriorating quality of dairy products has led to many deaths in China. There is also the discovery of a crime ring marketing fake or tainted meat products. It also said that many fast-food restaurants have suffered losses in China due to those food hygiene issues.

India’s food hygiene situation

Similarly, food scandals have also plagued India for more than decades. Such as the case of Maggi’s instant noodles where it was discovered that Maggi paste contains additives.

Other cases show the challenges that India faces in food sourcing. The widespread use of milk adulterants can cause short-term digestive issues and additionally long-term continual health issues.

In addition to the recent increasing political awareness, health and safety issues have also become a publicly visible concern.

For example, an accusation by Hindustan Unilever of dumping toxic waste which caught the attention of social media years ago. Such events point to a wave of discontent as information becomes much more widespread and consumers become much more informed.

This thing is becoming very much inevitable as the consumers grow more educated and also more savvy.

Unfortunately, the food safety standards in India have not yet matched the food safety in other countries. This is why various type of products shipped from India are being rejected, from food to generics and cosmetics.

This raises the likelihood that India’s food hygiene monitoring system to be inconsistent and also arbitrary. This might be the result of increasing governance and bureaucratic failures and errors at the regulatory level.

Many have also argued that food testing laboratories do not have adequate equipment and expertise. Assuming that all Maggi product is the same worldwide, there appears to be an error in India’s food hygiene monitoring system.

The solution for China’s and India’s food hygiene situation

For both China and India, the solution they needed right now is to create a more effective appropriation of assets. They also need tighter strategic and operational coordination among companies and the renovation of a stability-of-powers system.

Restrictions and sanctions should additionally be implemented in lots of regions that are in urgent need of attention. However, focusing too much on products might be a counterproductive action because China and India are in need of a robust overhaul.
